Although they eventually broke up when Elena began to reciprocate Damon’s love and decided to be honest with Stefan about her feelings and intentions. He was determined to move on, before finding out that Elena was Damon’s daughter.

In 4×18, when Elena finds out that Katherine is going to meet Elijah. She poses as Petrova’s doppelganger and comes face to face with Elijah Mikaelson. Elena poses as Katherine and kisses him from her when he approaches her. But Elijah realized that it wasn’t Katherine, but Elena. It is the only kiss between Elijah and Elena. In the episode “Dangerous Liaisons”, when Damon saves Matt and Rebekah finds out about her, she ends up making out with Damon because she is emotionally upset. Stefan and Rebekah first met in 1922 and quickly developed into a relationship after learning they were both vampires. But when Klaus and his family were forced to flee, Klaus gave Rebekah the choice between him and Stefan. When she chose Stefan, Klaus stabbed her with the White Oak Stake. At some point, they really liked each other.
